Message from the President
Dear fellow Iota Alumni, It is my distinct pleasure to announce the formation of the Iota Alumni Association, a group dedicated to lending financial, physical, and intellectual resources to the Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. We have had a very exciting time over the past year from our first organizational meeting where we adopted our constitution and elected our first Board of Directors to our official recognition by National Headquarters to our first service project as the IAA. But this is only the beginning. I have no doubt that this upcoming year is going to be even greater, to say nothing about the many more years after that. Leaving school usually means the beginning of a whole new chapter in our lives. But in no way does it mean that we no longer love music or our fraternity. The friends we made, the commitments we swore to, and the ideals we cherished last a lifetime so what we have here is a chance to continue the work we started in college and help give these young new actives the same wonderful experience that we had. Your Board of Directors is here to work for you, so please feel free to contact us with any comments, questions, ideas, or concerns. Remember, though we maybe generations apart, we will always be brothers united in our love of music. AEA, Sarah Hampton President, Iota Alumni Association Director Wins National Award Established in 1984 to recognize regionally known band directors and laymen who have made contributions to the band field, the A. Frank Martin award, named after the first Grand President of the fraternity, is awarded by the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi. Nominated by the Iota Chapter, this year the award went to our very own Sponsor and Director of Bands, James Gerald "Bucky" Johnson. Please join us in congratulating Bucky on this much deserved award. |

Matt McCullough, At-Large thunder@polter.net Percussion Our board members serve two-year staggered terms with elections for the two at-large members on odd years and the three executive members on even years. This year at our annual meeting, the two at-large seats are up for election and are open to any IAA members. Qualifications include a love of the fraternity and a willingness to have and opinion and let others know about it. Seriously, though, the at-large members generally are in charge of our various service projects. We'd love to see new faces and hear fresh ideas, so go ahead and run for these positions. Board members do not need to live in metro Atlanta, as most of our communication is over email anyway. Homecoming We would like to encourage all alumni to dust off those instruments and come join us for Homecoming on October 20th by playing in the Alumni Band. Last year, not only did we form the tunnel for pregame, but we marched on the field at halftime and played a tune with the band. We would love to make a huge impression this year with a strong showing of Iota alumni. GTBAA will be sending out more information and sign up sheets this fall. If you are not already receiving the GTBAA newsletter, please contact Sam "Fireball" Feuer at flig@bigfoot.com. |

Message from the VP
Brothers of Iota, This first year of existence of the IAA has been full of excitement and promising new ideas. Recently the IAA organized and presented a Ritual workshop and roundtable discussion for the active chapter. Approximately 20 active brothers and 5 alumni attended the event. The workshop was extremely popular and the chapter was gracious enough to ask the IAA to organize another one next fall. The IAA is always looking for ways to serve the active chapter using the resources that are deemed ready and necessary. This is where YOU come into play. Every alumni association is only as good as its member; and we need YOU to become one. Iota was recently named the host for the 2002 Southeast District Convention, and as their alumni association we would like to be a service for the chapter to use to make the convention better. So what does that mean? It means the Boh want you to "JOIN THE IAA". Joining the IAA is very easy. All you have to do is fill out the enclosed membership form and send it in with your dues. Or, if you are planning on coming to the meeting, you can bring it all there. By joining the IAA, you automatically become a member of the National Alumni Association, and will receive a membership card from nationals. So, what does your $50 get yo? Honestly it doesn't get you much (although it is tax deductable), but it will serve the Iota Chapter tremendously. The IAA hopes that as membership expands so will the service that we can give the chapter. Some of our short term goals are to: refinish the chapter room floor, pay for Iota's delegate to National Convention every two years, start a scholarship for a brother of academic and fraternal excellence, and publish and distribute an annual newsletter to all of Iota's alumni. Please visit the IAA website at http://people.atl.mediaone.net/kunberger/. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 404-794-8285 or cheese@polter.net. Fraternally yours, Jeff "Cheese" Kunberger - IAA Vice Chair New Chapter Installed Iota had the honor of serving as the big brother chapter over the past year to the colony at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. On February 4, 2001 the Kappa Pi chapter was installed by Iota with National Council members and brothers from chapters across the district in attendence. |
Iota to Host Convention
The Southeast District Convention will be coming home to Atlanta in 2002. After almost a year of preparation, Iota presented a joint convention bid with Epsilon Theta and the Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma chpaters from Morris Brown College at the SED COnvention in Nashville, Tennessee. Following a raucous joint session where several delegates attempted to move to a vote without hearing presentations from the other two bidding chapters, Atlanta was selected as the site of the 2002 convention. Convention will be held March 7 - 10, 2002 at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, which is located downtown on Courtland Street. The Sheraton is part of the elite group of convention hotels in the downtown/midtown area - it features ample meeting space, an indoor pool with a retractable roof, and nearly 800 guest rooms. They will be offering a $99 per night room rate for quad occupancy during convention, which is particularly impressive considering the usual rate at that hotel is $259 per night. The step show will be held in the Southern Company Ampitheater in the south end of Centennial Olympic Park. This unique location should ensure that our step show will be one of the best ever. Our registration costs are currently projected at $15 for registration and $20 for banquet. Perhaps the best aspect of this project has been the collaboration between Epsilon Theta and the Morris Brown chapters. Working together for the past few months has brought all four chapters closer together - in the future, this effort should serve as a model for the rest of the district. We're still finalizing many of the details related to convention - if anyone out there has any suggestions, please let us know! Otherwise, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend convention - we look forward to seeing many of you there. Don't Let Us Forget! Remember that story about that guy that did that thing that time...?! Well we don't. The GT Band is putting together a history display for the centennial anniversary and we would like to create a book of band stories. Your stories! This way the classic antidotes and adventures of the brothers, sister, and bandmembers will never be forgotten. Please send your stories to me, Jessica Shearer, current Iota Historian at: 604 Maner Terrace SE Smyrna, GA 30080 Or email them to gt7588b@prism.gatech.edu. Thanks for helping us all remember the history of our band! - Jessica |
National Convention The 2001 National Convention, A Musical Quest in the Southwest, will be held July 25-28th, 2001 at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi, TX. The National ALumni Association will be conducting business as well as have several social outings for all alumni in attendence. We encourage anyone who can attend this event to please do so. The deadline for registration is June 8th. For more information, visit the website at http:www.kkytbs.org/2001natconv.html. |
Announcements
Iota won a National Service Award for their annual "Concerts at the Shaft", the large central fountain on campus. District Day was another huge success this year with over 300 brothers and sisters attending from across the southeast. As always, alumni are encouraged to attend this annual event every spring. The GT Band traveled to Ireland this spring on an invitation for the marching band to the Dublin St. Patrick's Day parade and the symphonic band to perform at the National Symphony Hall. Keeping in Touch The IAA website: http://people.atl.mediaone.net/kunberger/ Visit here for updated information on upcoming events, contact information for the board, and documents such as our constitution and minutes to all the meetings. Some of the proposed projects include restaining the chapter room floor and relocating the tuba shed. These are both very large projects and will require lots of manpower. Fall ritual workshop Our spring ritual workshop was such a success that we have been asked to present another one in the fall. Many of the actives who missed it are looking forward to the next one. Next year's meeting Details, details, details... Discussion of ongoing long-term projects: We willbe getting a status update and discuss future timelines and estimated completion dates for Brotherhood scholarship Delegate assistance Newsletter Other random stuff we need to talk about: IAA logo Comings and goings Eat, drink, and be merry!!! |
| The originally mailed version of this newsletter contained two additional pages in this location. They were an Iota Alumni Association Membership Form which was a slightly altered version of the National Alumni Association Membership Form (.doc / .pdf) and the old National Alumni Association Information Sheet which provided a breakdown of what your National Dues cover as well as general information about the National Alumni Association. Some of this information can be found on the Financial Information Page under the Dues Breakdown section. |

Message from the President
Dear Alumni, My name is Jonathan Sims and I am the new President of the Iota chapter. I am 7th in my line that crossed in the Spring of 1999. I am the second President out of my class and I served as Vice President to Iota for the past year. As you may or may not know, Uniforms, Libraries, and Props were taken away from KKY/TBS and given back to the band. I see this as an opportunity for Iota to step forward and take charge. This spring semester we have had fragile relations with our sponson and Epsilon Theta at times. I see Iota emerging from these fragile realtions, striving higher than ever within the Tech Band. More and more brothers want to be involved in all musical ensembles, and I feel that the best way a brother can present themselves to the Tech Band is by simply leading by example. I'm here as President to lead the meetings, but more importantly to lead the chapter into a new year. With our previous President, Chris Porter, being an SED officer and with and with the upcoming District Convention that we have secured along with Iota Rho and Epsilon Theta, our chapter is becoming more on a presence in the SED. Our goal is to Strive for the Highest, and that time si now! I look forward to working with all alumni this coming fall and next spring. AEA,, Jonathan Sims, President - Iota Spring '99 The Band Goes International In april, a vast majority of the band traveled to Ireland to playin a concert tour of the Emerald Isle. Most of the chapter attended, and ggod times and good Music was had by all. Also in April, the Basketball Pep Band traveled to San Diego to play in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and a few brothers that did not attend Ireland went to the PepBand. A quick trip down to Tiajuna via Trolley had the GT Band represented in 3 different countries at the same time. |
New Perspectives
Hello. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Elizabeth Van Patten, one-fourth of our newest candidate class, "What the hell is that sheep doing to my T???!(Bend over and I'll show ya!)" I think I speak for the rest of my class in saying we really had a blast getting to know the brothers this semester and look forward o working with you. Who are my line brothers? Well let me tell you a little bit about them as well. Becky Crum is a freshman tuba DAMMITT!! in Mechanical Engineering. Her big brother is David Stevenson, who's the one responsible for getting "Probation" and the number 1832 put on her jersey. Ian Turner is Scottish and a Saxaphone player in Computer Science. His big brother is Chris Cox. On Ian's jersey is "Mead" and the number 36. Next is J. Scott "Ballz" Wilson also a Tuba DAMMITT!! He's an currently an Aerospace Engineer. Jese Guthrie, his big brother, has "creatively" :-) come up with "Ballz" and the number 00 to put on J. Scott's jersey. Finally it's my turn. I'm Liz, a senior in Computer Engineering and not likely to graduate soon. I'm a percussionist and I share my big brother, Jason Allgood, with Sandy Shackelford, Patrick Butler, Vicky Meliopoulis, and sister Jennifer Hinkle. So, I have "Brokern" on my jersey with the number 6'9". I encourage any brother who doesn't know WHY we have what we have on our jersey's to come on over and ask. We don't bite.. well most of us :-) So why did I decide to begin my journey toward brotherhood with Kappa Kappa Psi? Well, I'll tell you/ I, honestly, just wanted something to do. I had been pretty active in band back up at NC State, where I transferred from, and I wanted to be active here too. It is often said that the reasons you begin something are often not the reasons you finish. It is true here with me. I found, during my candidate training that I wanted to make the brothers proud of me. Especially, my line brothers. I found motivation and determination in that. And I can say that because of the brothers and brotherhood I learned about, I will continue to Strive for the Highest. Brotherhood is a journey, not a destination. AEA, Liz |
